The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program at Michigan State University is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It aims to create opportunities for academic development, aid students in meeting essential college requirements, and inspire those who are first-generation, income-eligible, or have documented disabilities to successfully complete their post-secondary education. The primary objective of TRIO SSS is to enhance college retention and graduation rates among its participants. Within the MSU TRIO SSS Program, students are granted access to customized cultural activities that facilitate their adjustment to university life and enable them to build strong relationships with peers, instructors, and advisors.

Mission Statement

The TRIO Student Support Services program at Michigan State University is committed to the success of students from diverse backgrounds who are first-generation, income eligible, and students with disabilities. Our students achieve academic success and personal growth by engaging in holistic programming such as academic support, mentoring, and guidance. TRIO SSS seeks to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters academic excellence, financial literacy, and a lifelong commitment to learning. Through our dedicated staff and comprehensive services, we strive to create a sense of belonging and community among TRIO scholars, equipping them with the tools to succeed academically, professionally, and personally.

Our vision is to create a supportive and inclusive community that fosters academic excellence, personal growth, and lifelong learning for all TRIO students. We envision a program that provides comprehensive academic support and guidance to help TRIO students achieve their educational, personal, and professional goals and unlock their full potential. We strive to foster a sense of belonging and community, and empower TRIO students to become successful, engaged, and socially responsible members of their communities.

Increase retention and graduation rates of TRIO scholars

We strive to provide comprehensive support that addresses the unique needs and challenges of TRIO students, including academic, financial, and personal support. Our goal is to help TRIO students persist in their studies and successfully complete their academic programs.

Enhance academic performance and success of TRIO scholars

We provide academic support and guidance to help TRIO students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed academically, including tutoring, mentoring, academic advising, and study skills workshops.

Foster a sense of belonging and community among TRIO scholars

We aim to create a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters a sense of belonging and community among TRIO students. We provide opportunities for students to connect with one another, engage in campus activities, and participate in leadership and personal development programs.

Provide TRIO scholars with opportunities for personal development

We provide opportunities for TRIO students to develop leadership skills, participate in community service, and engage in other personal development activities. Our goal is to empower TRIO students to become engaged, socially responsible members of their communities.

Address the unique needs and challenges of TRIO scholars from diverse backgrounds

We recognize that TRIO students come from diverse backgrounds and may face unique challenges and barriers to success. We strive to provide comprehensive support that addresses these unique needs and challenges, including academic, financial, and personal support. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment that values diversity and promotes a culture of respect, compassion, and intellectual curiosity.
