BSP Honors Options

The MSU Honors College describes an Honors Option as a “more extensive or more advanced work than is required of all students in a regular course.” Honors Options must be supervised by a member of the MSU faculty.

Yes. Any MSU Honors College student may request an Honors Option for any of the Bailey courses (ANR 210, ANR 310, ANR 311, and ANR 410).

In most cases, Dustin Petty, the BSP Academic Advisor, will supervise your Honors Option. Occasionally, Dr. Sarah Prior, the BSP Director, will be conducting research and have spots available for undergraduate researchers. Nevertheless, if you are interested in completing an Honors Option, you should contact Dustin.

You should contact Dustin within the first three weeks of class to declare your interest in an Honors Option. Once you have proposed a topic and decided on your final product, there will be a form to complete for the MSU Honors College.

You can choose any topic that your ANR class isn’t already covering. The options are literally endless. Dustin will need to approve your final topic and may offer suggestions based on your interests.

Again, this is up to you (but must be approved by Dustin). Some final products that previous scholars have chosen include podcasts, posters, research papers, children’s books, welding project, artwork, etc. Each BSP Honors Option must be shared on the student’s ePortfolio and they post a reflection using the Bailey Learning Assessment Model.

You must submit your final product and have your reflection posted on your ePortfolio before the end of the last week of classes for that semester.

Middle Nines

A Middle Nine is an MSU course that supports the goals you’ve expressed in your Learning Vision Statement. Before a student can receive the Minor in Leadership in Integrated Learning, they must have at least nine credits (Middle Nines) declared and reported.

In your advising appointments with Dustin, he’ll ask you each semester about any classes you’d want to count as a Middle Nine. He’ll ask you questions to clarify how it pertains to the goals in your Learning Vision Statement. Alternatively, you can always email him to inquire about a class counting as a Middle Nine.

Like all aspects of the Bailey Scholars Program, your Middle Nines must be documented in your ePortfolios. You should have a Middle Nines section on your ePortfolio menu bar; and each course should have its own section on a drop-down menu. (Ask Dustin or a convener if you need help with this.)

For each of your Middle Nine courses, you need to use the BSP Learning Assessment Model to report on your Middle Nine Experience. The six components of the BSP Learning Assessment Model are:

  • Envision: What do you hope to learn from this experience?
  • Prepare: What do you need to do to prepare yourself?
  • Do: What were your experiences?
  • Gather: What is your evidence or artifacts from this experience?
  • Reflect: What did you learn from this experience that links to your Learning Vision Statement, the BSP Five
  • Questions the Bailey Principles, etc.?
  • Connect: How has this experience affected you, your growth, or your LVS? What will you do next?

At least one artifact from the course must be included in the ePortfolio post. An artifact can include a paper written for the class, a presentation, a video, even the course syllabus.

Senior Share Presentations

  1. You will share a creative presentation to illustrate your learning journey through the Bailey Scholars Program – and you must explain how it represents your learning journey’s specific components of (1) Learning Vision Statement, (2) each BSP core course, and (3) each Middle Nine course. Examples of creative presentations include:
    1. A poem
    2. A song that is performed
    3. A piece of art (painting, drawing, sculpture, woodworking, welding, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery, etc.)
    4. A video/short film
    5. Creation of food
    6. A research poster
    7. A piece of creative writing (NOT a reflection like you would do for a Bailey core course)
    8. A new piece of software or computer program
    9. Other modes are obviously permitted – if you have any questions, reach out to Dustin early in the planning process
  2. You must inform preview your Senior Share Presentation with Dustin at least one month before your scheduled Senior Share Presentation.
    1. Under NO CONDITIONS are PowerPoint or Prezi presentations allowed. Presentations should last between 10 and 15 minutes.
  1. No less than one week before your Senior Share Presentation date, your Middle Nines must be documented in your ePortfolios. You should have a Middle Nines section on your ePortfolio menu bar; and each course should have its own section on a drop-down menu. (Ask Dustin or a convener if you need help with this.)

At least one artifact from the course must be included in the post. An artifact can include a paper written for the class, a presentation, a video, even the course syllabus.

  2. The rest of your ePortfolio must also be completed, including (1) current Learning Vision Statement, (2) BSP Five Questions, (3) resume/CV, (4) your Top Five Strengths, and (5) the pages for your ANR core courses (if you’re currently enrolled in one of the core courses, that section may still be a work in progress).  You’re always allowed to have more on your ePortfolio, but these are the required components.
