Emily Abrams

Emily Abrams was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and is currently the Assistant Program Director for the Dow STEM Scholars Program. Previously, she served as the Academic Success Coordinator for the TRIO Student Support Services program. In addition to her role in Pathways, she is also a PhD candidate in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education at Michigan State University, researching college student mental health through a mad studies and disability studies lens. A true homebody, Emily is an avid knitter and crocheter, cat(s) and dog parent, and truly appreciates reality TV (especially The Real Housewives franchise)! When she does venture out into the great outdoors, Emily enjoys exploring the West Coast and Southern California with her wife, Colleen.

What I like most about working in Pathways is the opportunity to create a space for students to find community on such a large campus. I also love that I am able to work on programs and initiatives that give students access to having their basic needs met and teaching them useful life skills that they can take with them beyond the university.

The Dairy Store! I love the strawberry ice cream, and I yearn for the day mint chocolate chip earns a permanent spot in the flavor lineup.

Explore outside of your major! I experienced the most growth, academically and personally, when I started taking classes in other departments. For me, it was taking courses in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and my class on Japanese art and culture!

I studied Music Performance (Voice) at Otterbein University in Westerville, OH. I also received my master's degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education, as well as a graduate certificate in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Miami University in Oxford, OH. My favorite college memory is what my roommate and I called "IHOP Thursdays", which is where, after our 8:00am conducting class every Thursday, we would go to IHOP and get pancakes to congratulate ourselves for not sleeping through our alarms!
