Happy summer! University Advising has successfully transitioned into the summer academic season, and we are gearing up for New Student Orientation Advising and Enrollment to begin on June 10, 2024, for most colleges.

University Advising

Due to limited student traffic in many of our residential locations during the summer months, UA advisors will be centrally located in our Ground Level MSU Union office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays.

Advising Initiative

A core value of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) is demonstrating a commitment to excellence in all dimensions of student success. One dimension of success that the Michigan State University advising community has made a commitment to is the persistence and retention of our students.

In collaboration with the Undergraduate Education Strategic Retention team, advisors across campus have actively participated in outreach campaigns that sought to identify students who haven't yet enrolled and to address barriers impacting their ability to enroll in a future semester. This has been an ongoing partnership that dates back to the summer of 2022, with advisors contributing each academic semester.

This academic year, advisors from nine different advising units/colleges reached out to over 5,000 students, with the most recent campaign seeing more than 700 students returning for the fall 2024 semester. Notably, financial concerns were often cited as a barrier to enrollment. With the support of the collaborative Office of Undergraduate Education and Office of Financial Aid Retention Grant Fund, advisors were able to work with the Strategic Retention team to help secure nearly $26,000 to support students who were unable to enroll due to a previous balance on their account. This successful collaboration demonstrates MSU’s overall commitment to going above and beyond for student success.

Many thanks to Strategic Retention Managers, Justin St. Charles and Dr. Christina Bridges for their dedication in leading this charge. It is a reminder that we as an advising community continue to make a difference for every student.

I look forward to a productive summer introducing our new Spartans to campus, with an eye toward all the great work we’ll do this fall.
