More than 350 MSU undergraduate students showcased their research at the 2017 Mid-Michigan Symposium for Undergraduate Research Experiences on July 26

More than 350 MSU undergraduate students, visiting students participating in MSU summer research programs, and students from select institutions showcased their research at the 2017 Mid-Michigan Symposium for Undergraduate Research Experiences (Mid-SURE) on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at the Huntington Club (at Spartan Stadium).

This event provided students involved in research within any MSU research program, and at select institutions across Michigan, the chance to be evaluated and to share their work with peers, faculty and other external audiences.  Mid-SURE presentations fall into 14 different categories:  Agriculture & Animal Science; Biochemistry & Molecular Biology; Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering; Cell Biology, Genetics & Genomics; Chemical Engineering & Materials Science; Civil & Environmental Engineering; Computer Science & Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Environmental Science & Natural Resources; Epidemiology & Public Health; Integrative Biology; Mechanical Engineering; Physical & Mathematical Sciences and Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences.

Students presented their posters, which offer a visual representation of their research through text, charts, graphs and other visual aids.  Evaluators provided feedback in the following areas:  introduction and goals, methods, results, conclusions and future work, poster presentation and verbal presentation.

This event also featured a graduate school recruitment fair that provided an opportunity for Mid-SURE participants to talk with graduate school recruiters from across the country about a variety of graduate studies programs and additional research opportunities.

Approximately one third to half of the students who participated in this event are from underrepresented populations in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

MidSURE represents a collaborative effort between the MSU Undergraduate Research Office, the MSU Graduate School’s Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP), the MSU College of Engineering’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (EnSURE), the BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action, and the MSU Research Education Program to Increase Diversity in Health Researchers (REPID).
