Spring is here!
Congratulations to all the graduating Spartans—I am eager to see how the world will change because of you! Congratulations as well to all the amazing staff and faculty who make MSU a space for diversity of thought, creativity, and innovation where students can thrive—I am so proud to continue to call this place home.
Our collective work continues as we welcome a new class of Spartans into our fold. By being an informed community, we can support our college and campus partners to provide a positive experience for incoming students. I’d like to share some important dates as we enter our 2025 New Student Orientation (NSO) and NSO-Advising and Enrollment season:
- May 2: NSO Desire2Learn (D2L) opens – This is the platform that newly admitted students use to complete the virtual portion of orientation which allows them to learn and navigate important information needed to be successful at MSU.
- Mid-May – Colleges will begin to contact students primarily via their MSU email (encourage students to check their emails and take action ASAP).
- June 6: NSO D2L closes – This is the last day admitted students will be able to complete the virtual orientation so they can be guaranteed an advising and enrollment appointment for the summer season (if students are late admitted, they will be directed to August NSO).
- June 9: Advising and Enrollment begins – Prior to this date colleges will contact students to schedule advising appointments to ensure students begin connecting with their college major and schedule their fall 2025 courses (please be advised that appointments in some colleges may take up to two weeks to schedule; communicate patience to families if you engage with them during this period of time).
- July 18: Advising and Enrollment ends – Students who completed their D2L modules on time should have scheduled an appointment and met with their college.
- July 25: August NSO D2L course opens – Late admits and admitted students with incomplete modules
- Aug. 13 – August NSO Advising begins
- Aug. 15 – August NSO Advising ends
- Aug. 18-21 – Fall Welcome Program
- Aug. 25 – Classes begin
In preparation for NSO, advising and enrollment academic advisors across campus recently attended Institutional Research training to learn how use available dashboards and daily reporting features to support our new students. NSO advising leads are key partners in the automation of the NSO-Major Change Form which will help prompt students prior to completing D2L to change their major if eligible, allowing students to engage with the correct college at the beginning of their journey.
Michigan Academic Advising Association (MiACADA) Conference
Michigan State University welcomes the Michigan Academic Advising Association (MiACADA) Conference to campus on Friday, May 9. Twenty years ago, the first meeting of this group was held at MSU, and we proudly welcome professionals from colleges and universities from across the state of Michigan back to celebrate their past, present and future. I’d like to acknowledge MSU’s own Andrew Murray, College of Social Science and Elizabeth Springer, College of Education, as this year’s conference co-chairs.
