Student Resources

These resources are designed to enhance student academic and personal success. Our resources assist scholars in navigating the university system, building academic skills, and engaging in meaningful academic and life experiences.

Academic Advising

Academic Advising in the TRIO SSS program supports the TRIO community through collaborative and comprehensive advising services as students explore, navigate MSU and graduate. TRIO SSS provides trained advisors to work with all TRIO scholars. TRIO Advisors help students navigate through NSO Orientation, semester registration, and graduation with general education and TRIO 3-2-1 requirements. Students should meet regularly with their TRIO advisor at least once a semester.

In addition to guiding students to academic support resources, TRIO advisors help students identify opportunities across the University, including opportunities to join clubs and organizations, become involved in the community, study abroad, pursue undergraduate research, apply for competitive scholarships and fellowships, and explore career and professional development.

Our program is committed to exposing students to a rich variety of cultural enrichment activities designed to broaden perspectives, inspire creativity, and foster a deeper understanding of the world around us.

From attending local and regional cultural events, such as theater performances, art exhibitions, and music festivals, to participating in educational trips that explore the history and diversity of different communities, TRIO SSS offers experiences that enhance students' cultural awareness and appreciation. These activities not only provide enjoyment and inspiration but also encourage critical thinking and personal growth.

By engaging in these cultural experiences, our students gain valuable insights into different cultures, traditions, and viewpoints, which are essential for thriving in today's global society. Whether it's through exploring new art forms, understanding historical contexts, or simply enjoying a new cultural experience with peers, TRIO SSS is dedicated to enriching the lives of our students beyond their academic pursuits.

By meeting with your mentor twice a month each semester, you not only build a strong connection but also fulfill the “2” out of our 3-2-1 requirements. These regular interactions create a space for personalized guidance, where your mentor is dedicated to helping you thrive academically and personally.

Sign up for a mentor and make your college journey a rewarding one with TRIO SSS by your side.

Peer Mentors are current TRIO scholars from various majors who offer tailored guidance and advice to students throughout their time at MSU. They assist students as they progress through coursework, campus involvement, support services, and leadership opportunities. Peer Mentors do not serve as a student’s official academic advisor. Instead, they act as the initial point of contact for students’ personal, academic, or co-curricular questions or concerns. This can include advising related to the students’ transition to college, such as how to declare a major, understanding TRIO requirements, registration processes, policies/procedures, and overall academic success. Peer Mentors work closely with the TRIO SSS staff to provide accurate information and advice about majors, course selections, general education courses, 3-2-1 requirements, and policies and procedures at MSU.
