September 2023 Action Items and Resources for Students
Spartans,
It has been a great start to the academic year, and we hope you are settling into your fall semester of learning and growing. For our incoming students, we send a monthly email of action items and resources from across campus to help you. For our returning and more seasoned students, these emails serve to remind you of the action items and resources we have to offer.
Highlights
- Spring enrollment appointments begin in October. Be sure to schedule an appointment to meet with your academic advisor before enrollment begins.
- Celebrate Homecoming 2023 Sept. 18-23 with a variety of events offered by the MSU Alumni Office.
- MSU’s 2023 Fall Break is Monday, Oct. 23 and Tuesday, Oct 24.
1) Take care of yourself and others.
- Support your physical and emotional transition to MSU with Student Health and Wellness.
- Download the SafeMSU App, official app of MSU Police and Public Safety! Use the “virtual friend walk” to share your location in real-time, access Safe Ride from ASMSU and more.
2) Engage in your academic experience.
- Keep in mind the university’s Academic Calendar as you make changes to your fall 2023 schedule in the Student Information System.
- Spring enrollment begins in October. Schedule an appointment with your academic advisor now to plan. Find them on the list of academic advising resources by college and learn about your advising rights and responsibilities at MSU’s Academic Policies.
- Plan your degree with the Academic Requirements Report (Degree Audit).
- Check out the Neighborhood Student Success Center resources available in on-campus neighborhoods.
- MSU’s 2023 Fall Break is Monday, Oct. 23 and Tuesday, Oct 24.
- Participate in Undergraduate Research opportunities in science, engineering, medicine, and the arts and humanities.
3) Find your way and make connections.
- Visit Involve@State to connect with student clubs and groups.
- Celebrate Homecoming 2023 Sept. 18-23 with a variety of events offered by the MSU Alumni Office. Don’t miss the parade Friday, Sept. 22!
- Save the date for the second annual Spartan Family Weekend, Nov. 3-5!
4) Get involved outside the classroom.
- Apply for an on-campus job! View Student Life & Engagement job postings.
- Activate your Recreational Sports and Fitness Services (RSFS) membership and use three indoor intramural gyms on campus, the new turf field, IM sports and more!
- Schedule a meeting with a career advisor to prep for fall career fairs.
5) Connect with important resources.
- Take advantage of no-cost training on Microsoft 365. Visit spartanslearn.msu.edu for more.
- Reach out to the MSU IT Service Desk for help with password resets, Wi-Fi issues and any other tech problem.
- Visit the new arts.msu.edu to see what’s happening in the arts on campus, starting with the Fall Opening Party at the MSU Broad Art Museum Sept. 8 from 6-10 p.m.
- A new Spartan Student Rewards program is now available in the MSU Athletics app! Register for your chance to earn points and prizes for attending games.
- Check out the College Life East Lansing guide to learn to be a great community member.
- Fuel up with on- and off-campus dining plans!
6) Billing and financial aid updates.
- Need to make a payment? Learn about fee schedules and everything you need to know about paying your bill.
- Check student.msu.edu to review any balance due on your student account — next billing statements come out Sept. 9 and are due Oct. 1.
- Questions about billing? Email the Student Accounts Office at Student.Receivables@ctlr.msu.edu or reach them at 517-355-3343.
- Set up an authorized guest in the Student Information System, so a parent or other individual can view and pay your bill.
- The Student Accounts Office will not be able to discuss your account with anyone unless they are authorized guests.
- Update guest access in SIS via the “My Profile” tile > “Share My Info Electronically” in the left navigation. Authorized guests will receive emails in the future whenever a new bill is produced.
- Check the status of your financial aid via the MSU Financial Aid Portal in the Student Information System.
- Your financial aid package may not be complete until you finalize any outstanding items. Verify you are viewing the August 2023-May 2024 tab to act for the upcoming aid year. If actions on your financial aid portal homepage are listed as “Completed” or “Not Required,” no further action is needed.
