January 2022 Action Items and Resources for Students

Please remember to get your COVID-19 booster and fill out your verification form between January 26 and February 1st. For details, please refer to the president’s recent message. You can receive a Pfizer COVID-19 booster through the MSU Health Care Pharmacy. Also, Booster clinics will be held Jan. 17, Jan. 26 and Jan. 31 at Breslin, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Appointments are strongly encouraged and can be made via the health department website.

While COVID is top of mind and we need to ensure we are doing all we can to keep each other safe, we want to remind you to take care of your total wellness, including ensuring you are getting regular exercise each day, such as walking, and practicing healthy eating habits. You can find campus partners for student health and wellness here.

Also, Counseling and Psychiatric Services, or CAPS, provides a broad range of resources and services, including triage, consultation, counseling (for individuals, couples, and a host of groups), psychiatric care, referral services, and outreach. Be sure to check out the resources that are available to you.

 

2. Engage in your academic experience

MSU offers many technology tools to support your success. Enroll in a self-guided MSU Tools and Technologies course to learn more about D2L/Brightspace, Zoom, and other tools. If you want to dig deeper into D2L/Brightspace in particular, try Getting Started with D2L. We also offer free, virtual instructor-led trainings about collaboration tools: Zoom, Spartan 365, and specific Microsoft applications like Teams, OneNote, and OneDrive. Visit the Spartans Learn website for more information on those.

The last day to add a course for Spring 2022 is Friday, January 14, 2022. The last day to drop a full session course with a full refund for Spring 2022 is Friday, February 4, 2022.

Our Spring 2022 Career Fair is Now Accepting Resumes. Log into Handshake to view fair listing and to submit your resume to participating employers for interview opportunities.  Need help with your resume or job search? Click on the “Career Center” link in Handshake and then on “Appointments” to schedule a 1:1 meeting with a Career Services team member.

We are working hard to better communicate with students through these monthly action emails. Enter a drawing to win a $75 gift card! (See the end of this email for details.) Participants can expect to be notified by email next month if their name is drawn.

 

3. Find your way and make connections

Springticipationgives you the opportunity to learn about MSU’s Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) where you can find others with like interests and build community. Springticipation will be from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, in the Duffy Daugherty Football Building. Ask questions and gather information from the more than 200 RSOs in attendance and/or explore all 1,000-plus RSOs at Involve@State.

Save the Date for the Community, Curriculum, and Career (C3) Expo! The C3 Expo is a one-stop success event for all undergraduate students to connect with communities of support, learn about their curriculum (majors) and access career resources. The Spring C3 Expo will be held virtually (tentatively 12 - 2 p.m.) on Feb. 21, 2022 and in-person on Feb. 22, 2022 from 12 – 4 p.m. at the STEM Teaching and Learning Facility.

 

4. Get involved outside the classroom

A variety of exciting and educational opportunities will be offered to the MSU Community in celebration of the legacy of Dr. King. This includes the Student Leadership Conference and the Community Conversation taking place on Jan. 17, as well as the 5th Annual Social Justice Art Festival that kicks off on Jan. 19. MSU Athletics is hosting a Walk-On meeting this Friday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Skandalaris Football Facility. This is for serious interest only, and the meeting will focus on next steps and important information needed in the coming week. Email James Kirkland at kirkla74@msu.edu to RSVP.

Register to present at UURAF before February 10, 2022! The 24th annual University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF) will be held Friday, April 8, 2022 at the Breslin Student Events Center and online at Symposium by ForagerOne. The event is free and open to the public. Registration will open on Jan. 11 on the UURAF website and close on Feb. 10, 2022. All stages of research and creative scholarship from any semester are welcomed, and abstracts/proposals do not need to be complete at the time of registration.

 

5. Connect with important resources

Did you know that all MSU Colleges have a career management office – a part of the Career Services Network – with professionals and trained peer advisors to help you explore careers in for your major? They can help you develop job search documents, practice interviewing, and locate internships and jobs, as well as help you strategize for after-graduation jobs or continuing education. Reach out to a career consultant today.

 

6. Billing and financial aid

We recognize that for some, there has been difficulty getting in contact with the Office of Financial Aid and Student Accounts. Our offices have been experiencing higher than normal volumes of phone calls and emails, causing delays. We know this can be frustrating. We apologize for this inconvenience and we are extremely grateful for your patience.

Always be sure to review each billing statement that is produced. Unpaid bills will result in financial holds that will prevent future enrollment. The next statement will be available by the end of the day on today and will be due February 1, 2022.
