STEP Confidently Toward Your Future with the Spartans Transition to Excellence Program
Ashley Hewlett-Lemke, STEP Coordinator

STEP is a free program that connects incoming first-year students with a network of other Spartans passionate about and committed to making sure they successfully transition to MSU.

First-year students who connect with Michigan State University faculty, staff, and current students have better grades and a more successful transition to college. STEP, therefore, extends beyond the Academic Orientation Program (AOP) to provide support, resources, and community throughout the student’s first year.

Students invited to join STEP are paired with a STEP Professional Coach – an outstanding faculty or staff member- who has volunteered to assist with STEP. Coaches share stories about their own transitions and first-year experiences and support students as they make connections and engage in their undergraduate experience.

STEP’s mission is to help first-year students make CONNECTIONS and develop a sense of BELONGING to Michigan State University.
