Modernism In Science & Art: What Can We Know? (UGS 101 - 1)

(Click for date information)
Tu 12:40 PM - 1:30 PM
105A Berkey Hall
About 100 years ago, human thought advanced through a broad revolution called modernism in physical science, psychology, philosophy, and art. That vanguard consciousness needs to be understood by everyone today, so this seminar will introduce you to the context and breakthroughs (scientific papers, literary texts, artwork, and movies) of modernism. We will discuss special relativity and wave-particle duality in physics, the unconscious mind in psychology, completeness in mathematical logic, and a brief philosophy of science, while relating these ideas to parallel advances in the visual arts (impressionism, cubism, dada, and surrealism) and literature (selections from Dostoevsky, Rimbaud, Conrad, Joyce, Remarque and Woolf). These interdisciplinary discussions will help to build our capacity for analytical thinking and integrative reasoning, and we will use these ideas as launching-points to discuss the meaning of personal integrity and authenticity in our human endeavors.
