For nearly 50 years, MSU’s Upward Bound program has helped hundreds of high school youth in the Lansing area from low-income families, and/or families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree, to complete high school and enter a post-secondary educational institution. This is accomplished by providing fundamental support and academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. Tutoring, counseling, mentoring, career exploration, cultural enrichment, and work-study programs are also offered. The Upward Bound Program at Michigan State University motivates talented students from low-income families to complete high school and enter a post-secondary educational institution. Using Federal TRiO program funds and resources from Michigan State University, the program identifies students in the Lansing area and assists them in developing the academic and social skills necessary for matriculation in post-secondary education.

The program partners with Lansing’s Everett, Sexton and Eastern High Schools to identify and enroll approximately 85 Lansing-area high school freshmen and sophomores and assists them throughout their high school years to develop the academic and social skills necessary for matriculation in post-secondary education. The program provides college admissions and financial aid counseling and assistance to participants to expedite their admission to college as well as serves as a forum for university units to examine concepts and methods related to the recruitment, instruction, and motivation of disadvantaged students.

The Upward Bound Program maintains a cooperative complementary relationship with the Lansing School District, communicating information on progress made with the students enrolled in the program as well as the success achieved in employing new and innovative instructional methods related to the recruitment, instruction, and motivation of disadvantaged students.

The program also provides a forum for university units to examine concepts and methods related to the recruitment, instruction, and motivation of disadvantaged students. Upward Bound acts as an agent for state and regional TRiO programs, including Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Supportive Services, which seek interaction with Michigan State University.

The Upward Bound program continues to expand opportunities for its students by offering experiences through a variety of programs that focus on cultural enrichment and personal growth. this includes study skills workshops, cultural field trips, study abroad opportunities, college visits, career exploration, job shadowing experiences as well as programs to help parents and students navigate the financial aid process.

The Upward Bound Program, in all its aspects, operates to promote the pursuit of excellence, self esteem, and knowledge.
