Thirty-four high school students from mid-Michigan area school districts – Albion, Detroit, Jackson and Lansing – recently participated in the MSU GEAR UP Midwest College Tour.

In addition to MSU, the students visited Columbus Community College, Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis, Loyola University, Ohio State University, University of Illinois, and University of Toledo.  The goal of the tour was to give MSU GEAR UP students the opportunity to get information about some of the colleges and universities available to them outside of the state of Michigan.

“Many of our students have not had the opportunity to travel and therefore have not had the chance to explore their options outside of Michigan,” Pam Bellamy, director of the MSU GEAR UP program, said.  “This trip was a way to get them thinking about what they want to do when they get to college and what various colleges of universities have to offer them.  By gathering this information they can make a more informed decision about which college or university would be the best fit for them to complete their educational and career goals.”

During the tour, students were expected to be actively engaged in presentations at, or discussions about, all of the colleges or universities they had the opportunity to visit.  They were also encouraged to take notes about any school- or career-related opportunities that would be made available to them if they choose to pursue a post-secondary education at any of those colleges or universities in the future.

“I was overwhelmed with emotions throughout the whole tour,” an MSU GEAR UP program student from Jackson High School said.  “I saw some pretty awesome, breathtaking skylines and the sunrise in some pretty cool states.  I expanded my knowledge on possibilities in my future, while in Chicago and in some of the other out-of-state colleges and universities.  This trip was a truly amazing experience that I will never forget!”
