No two students have the same undergraduate experience at Michigan State University, but all students share the opportunity to select from an almost unlimited set of options, opportunities and inspirations. With the help of faculty, experienced advisors and other mentors, students are challenged to create an undergraduate program that meets their individual goals, using the vast resources of this internationally acclaimed public research university.
BUILD YOUR PROGRAM
Undergraduate students at Michigan State University may select from over 150 majors and a variety of specializations to enhance these majors. Specializations can be used to tailor the undergraduate program and make it unique.
Students are required to complete a set of University liberal-general education requirements, the requirements of a specific College, and the specific course requirements in the major. Students choose from a diversity of course types: laboratory, small group, large lecture, recitation, on-line, in-residence halls, technology infused, off campus, out-state, out-of-state, out-of-country.
START RIGHT
Undergraduate students are encouraged to begin their study at Michigan State University by enrolling in a Freshman Seminar, taught by some of the most outstanding faculty and administrators on campus. Freshman Seminars are intended to stimulate curiosity and discovery by exploring high-interest topic in a small class setting.
LIVE AND LEARN
Many undergraduate students choose to experience a living-and-learning program. These programs allow students to be part of a smaller learning community while enjoying the advantages of the large and diverse University.
INTERNATIONALIZE
Undergraduate students soon discover that the MSU campus has no boundaries. All students are encouraged to select a study-abroad program that enhances their area of study and broadens their understanding of the world. Additionally, students are encouraged to take advantage of the academic programs, events, and friendships that will prepare them to live and work in a culturally diverse and global environment.
APPLY KNOWLEDGE
Experiential learning is a key ingredient of undergraduate education at Michigan State University. In addition to study abroad experiences, students should work with faculty and advisers to identify an undergraduate research experience, select appropriate co-curricular activities, and participate in a significant service learning experience.
CONTRIBUTE
MSU is a land-grant University, committed to advancing knowledge and transforming lives. That commitment both describes the values of the institution and defines the undergraduate experience. Each year thousands of undergraduate students find ways to use their learning to contribute to the public good, as they prepare for careers and futures that will enhance their families, communities, and our world.
THINK OUTCOMES
The University community is committed to helping all students meet a core set of Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes. Students should consider the ways in which each of the experiences they pursue as undergraduates helps them meet and demonstrate these learning outcomes. The Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes help students understand how to weave together the undergraduate student experience at MSU in ways that will help them meet education and career goals.
