Your Goals

With so many opportunities, you need to prioritize in order to achieve your goals at MSU. We encourage you to consider and pursue an academic experience that excites and motivates you. We also support many of your other interests. Your goals should include personal, academic, and social dimensions, such as:

  • Staying healthy
  • Studying abroad
  • Excelling in your coursework
  • Finding a career path that excites you
  • Meeting new friends
  • Completing an internship
  • Engaging in theater or performing arts

Consider these areas as you begin mapping out your goals for your time at MSU. Click here(PDF) to get those goals down on paper. Use the goals worksheet to help you focus on what's important to you when meeting with academic advisors, faculty, and staff on campus.

Once you've written down your goals, begin to consider what you want your college experience to look like. Check out this website under Connect and Engage for suggestions. Consider discussing these plans with your advisor or resident mentor. There are plenty of opportunities on campus and people to help you achieve them. Asking for guidance will make the process much easier.

Goal setting is a fluid process. You'll accomplish goals, develop new interests, and have experiences that make you think differently during your time at MSU. Your goals are a framework, not a contract. Return to them throughout the year. Which have you accomplished? Which goals are no longer a priority? What are your new goals? How well is your college experience preparing you for your future? We encourage you to make changes accordingly and seek advice along the way.
